How We Smell

Posted on February 7, 2018 by Dara

“As far as God is concerned there is a sweet, wholesome fragrance in our lives. It is the fragrance of Christ within us, an aroma to both the saved and the unsaved all around us.

To those who are not being saved, we seem a fearful smell of death and doom, while to those who know Christ we are a life-giving perfume.”

2 Corinthians 2:15, 16

God thinks we smell like Jesus. When we receive Jesus as our Savior and Lord, the fragrance of Christ comes within us, and we continuously release His fragrance.

I can’t say whether God truly smells us, but clearly this is not a literal fragrance we smell with our noses; yet our lives affect others. People notice there is something different about us, even if they can’t put their finger on it.

Lately I have had a few women stop me out in public to give me a compliment. They have stared at me with a questioning expression as we have chatted for a moment. It has caught me off guard and I have wondered about their interest in me. Finally it occurred to me, maybe they are drawn to me because of Jesus.  Possibly they have sensed something and their only point of reference was something they saw about me. I must be more sensitive to the Holy Spirit during these times.

We will either be the fragrance of life or the stench of death, depending upon the perception of those who come in contact with us. This helps us understand why people respond to us differently. Some people are drawn to us while others are offended by us.

God has chosen to spread His fragrance in the earth through us. People will “smell” us and respond – one way or the other.
